What exactly is PI?

The shortest answer to one of the universe's greatest mysteries

3,141592653… forever …

Every digit is unique – they NEVER repeat and never end

The circle's best friend

Draw a circle. Measure around the edge (circumference) and divide by the width (diameter). The answer is ALWAYS 3.14159… = PI! Try it with a pizza base!

The universe in one number

With just 39 decimal places of PI you can calculate a circle as large as the OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE – accurate to a single hydrogen atom.

Infinite and irregular

PI is an "irrational number" – it can NEVER be written as a fraction. The digits are random with no pattern, forever. Nobody knows why!

PI Day = Einstein's birthday

March 14th (3/14) is celebrated as PI Day every year. Albert Einstein – one of history's greatest minds – was born on that very day in 1879. Coincidence?
